EDP Renewables, SRP, and Meta Announce New 200-MW Brittlebush Solar Park in Arizona

July 29, 20243 min read

In a significant move toward enhancing renewable energy infrastructure, EDP Renewables North America, along with Salt River Project (SRP) and tech giant Meta, has unveiled plans for the 200-MW Brittlebush Solar Park. This project is strategically located near Coolidge, Arizona, and marks a key development in the state's growing solar initiatives.

Harnessing Arizona's Sunshine

Arizona is no stranger to solar energy, and this park capitalizes on the state’s abundant sunlight. Sandhya Ganapathy, the CEO of EDP Renewables North America, expressed optimism about the project, stating, “Arizona’s forward-thinking policies and welcoming business environment for innovative technologies that prioritize sustainability make it a perfect location to generate solar.”

With this partnership, these organizations aim to reduce carbon emissions and enhance the sustainability of Arizona’s energy portfolio, a vision that resonates with many residents of the state.

Supporting Sustainable Goals

Brittlebush is more than just an energy project; it supports SRP’s pledge to responsibly decarbonize its energy generation mix. The project is positioned to deliver reliable and affordable power to one of the fastest-growing regions in the U.S.

According to Bobby Olsen, SRP's chief planning, strategy, and sustainability executive, “SRP is proud to partner with EDPR NA to bring more clean energy to Arizona and to support Meta’s renewable energy goals.” He highlighted that the project brings the utility closer to its target of achieving an 82% reduction in emissions by 2035 while delivering energy to its customers.

Powering Meta’s Operations

The Brittlebush Solar Park will primarily supply energy to Meta’s data center in Mesa, Arizona. This collaboration signifies the third renewable energy initiative between EDP Renewables and Meta, which is already benefiting from other resources provided by SRP, including the 100-MW West Line Solar Facility and the 300-MW solar + battery Eleven Mile Facility. These projects play a vital role in helping Meta achieve its ambitious goal of operating on 100% renewable energy and reaching net-zero emissions.

Economic Benefits for the Community

Beyond its environmental impact, the Brittlebush project is set to deliver significant economic benefits to the local community. Through its operational phase, the solar park will generate millions in payments to local governments. This financial support will enhance local services such as schools, health care facilities, and fire departments.

Furthermore, the project has created over 300 construction jobs and is expected to sponsor more than five permanent jobs for its operations and maintenance. Rick Miller, City Manager of Coolidge, stated, “Coolidge has worked hard to create a solar overlay for our community, and this partnership will strengthen our economy while providing local benefits.”

Meeting Future Energy Demands

The development of the Brittlebush Solar Park is also a proactive measure to meet the increasing energy demands of the Phoenix metro area. SRP's Integrated System Plan indicates that the utility must double its generating resources in the next decade, particularly as it plans to phase out 1,300 MW of coal resources.

This transition towards solar energy not only aligns with state policies but also illustrates a comprehensive approach to energy stewardship. By paving the way for future renewable projects, Arizona stands at the forefront of sustainable energy development.

A Collaborative Effort Toward Sustainability

The collaboration between EDP Renewables, Salt River Project, and Meta through the Brittlebush Solar Park signifies a promising step towards a cleaner, more sustainable energy future for Arizona. With its focus on community benefits, economic growth, and environmental responsibility, this initiative is a fantastic example of what can be achieved through partnerships dedicated to harnessing the power of renewable energy.
